'Best Community Waste Initiative'
national award for Reuse project

Best waste initiative award

At the prestigious Scottish Waste Industry Awards and dinner ceremony 2006, held on Wednesday 4 October at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel, the Edinburgh Furniture Initiative (EFI) a project of Four Square Scotland was presented with the award for the ‘Best Community Waste Initiative’.

This was for its reuse project based at the City of Edinburgh Councils Community Recycling Centres.

This multi-partnership project focuses on diverting reuseable household items from three Community Recycling Centres in Edinburgh.

This prestigious award recognises outstanding achievements in the waste sector in Scotland and is a reflection and endorsement of the high level of achievement attained by the EFI Reuse Project over the first 18 months of operation.

In particular the project was recognised for the social and environmental gains to date:

  • the diversion and supply of quality reusable items directly to help those in need
  • developing a unique multi-partnership to enable many more people in need
  • the significant tonnage diverted from landfill and recycling
  • creation of quality employment and training opportunities.
